Ramsey Center Volleyball Arena
Georgia's $40 million Bernard B. and Eugenia A. Ramsey Student Physical Activities Center is where the Georgia Bulldogs volleyball practice arena is located. The state-of-the-art three-court arena is equipped with an athletic training room and locker rooms. Retractable bleachers are extended on both sides of center court for a seating capacity of 1,925 during matches.
The first volleyball match played in the Ramsey Student Center was on Sept. 22, 1995 vs. a No. 3-ranked Florida. The Gators won 3-0 (15-3, 15-0, 15-7). A record that still stands today, the largest home crowd in program history attended the match (2,633). Named the best recreational facility in the country by Sports Illustrated in 1997, the Ramsey Center is a constant reminder of the University of Georgia's commitment to athletic excellence and the realization of what is required of greatness. During the summer of 2009, new additions were added to the volleyball area of the Ramsey Center with the program's coaches moving into new offices along with the addition of a theatre-style team video and scouting room, a new training room, a new visitor's locker room and a players' lounge that features a sitting area, a wi-fi bar and a nutrition station. The Ramsey Center encompasses 420,000 square feet - the equivalent of 5.5 acres of building - and the variety offered is as vast as the area covered. Five gymnasia, three swimming pools, three multipurpose rooms, a climbing wall, 10 racquetball courts, two international squash courts, two strength and conditioning rooms, a one-eighth-mile jogging track, an outdoor equipment rental room and an outdoor resource center are all available under one roof. Stegeman ColiseumChristened in 1964 as the Georgia Coliseum, the venue was officially renamed and dedicated to the memory of Herman James Stegeman on Saturday, March 2, 1996. Stegeman has undergone thorough renovations in the last few years, receiving a 21st Century face lift. When fans arrived for the start of the 2017 season, they walked in to the final product following more than $20-million in renovations over the past several years.
That summer, the arena received a massive center-hung scoreboard, new black seats, an improved LED lighting system, a state-of-the-art sound system and graphics above the horseshoe end celebrating past teams and retired jerseys. That followed work in the summer of 2016 which provided a dramatic mural covering the Coliseum’s distinctive end wall. In 2010, Stegeman’s concourses received a similar makeover, upgrading the graphics, enhancing spectator access to concessions and restrooms and adding 5,000-square feet of concourse space on each side of the arena. Those efforts won awards from both the American Institute of Architects and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. In addition, Stegeman Coliseum was utilized for rhythmic gymnastics and preliminary volleyball competition during the Centennial Olympic Games in 1996. |
